People are the most important asset of most NFPs. An effective Human Resources function is therefore critical in attracting, developing and retaining staff that can deliver high quality services to your clients.
On average, organisations that we work with spend 2.0 % of their total organisational expenditure on HR. The largest proportion of this investment is in training, followed by recruitment and selection.
What we have learnt
HR services are predominantly delivered in-house by NFPs. The most commonly outsourced services are:
design and delivery of training (mostly mandatory training but also some discretionary)
recruitment and selection (in the form of recruitment agencies)
workplace relations (in the form of external lawyers).
How to deliver more efficient and effective HR services
Invest in the development of your people - Targeted efforts in performance management and training reap significant returns, including improved participation and performance, an enhanced culture and reduced turnover.
Support frontline staff that work in stressful environments - Staff in many NFPs work in stressful and difficult positions with vulnerable clientele. Resilience training and the access to appropriate counselling services can help to staff manage the complex nature of their work.
Talk regularly about OH&S - Encourage people to talk about accidents and OH&S issues (e.g. at monthly meetings) to build shared understanding of what would be considered a WorkCover issue.
Promote early reporting of OH&S incidents - This requires having incident recording systems in place, and reporting could be encouraged by displaying OH&S posters and other promotional materials.
